Palác Chicago (Chicago Palace)

A functionalist palace in the centre of Prague, furnished in a way that was much ahead of its time.

In 1927 Count Jindřich Kolowrat-Krakowsky sold his Castle in Týnec to the architect Jaroslav Polívka, who then built the functionalist Chicago Palace for Count Jindřich. This was one of the most modern buildings in Prague, alongside the Baťa Store at Můstek. „Agriculture too has a pioneer of producing and selling methods, its own Baťa - Jindřich Kolowrat-Krakowsky, the owner of the Týnec Castle near Klatovy, who built the Chicago Palace in Prague. He furnished the building with the modern conveniences of American skyscrapers and opened a farm store on the premises, where he sold his own products, such as milk, home-made bread, vegetables and dairy products.” (the article Zemědělský Baťa, published in the agricultural magazine “Role”, 17 June 1928, in Prague). Today the Chicago Palace serves as an administrative building with retail premises on the ground floor.
